Clinician Burnout

“The need to move increasingly efficiently sparked anxiety within me”.

Emergency Medicine has some the highest burnout rates and it can occur in any field. This clinician, a pediatrician, captures what that burnout feels like. The anxiety, the fatigue, the helplessness, the fear.

I urge those not in medicine to read this article for two reasons. First to understand that the health care provider who may have seemed rash or indifferent to you at a visit is still a human being who is likely having trouble dealing with the stress of not having enough time to give you. Second, it makes a smaller but just as important point that a patient getting every test they want, does not equal better outcomes.
